CERRITOS, CA – There are many plays about Harriet Tubman, but none share her entire life story like The Spirit of Harriet Tubman. Come see for yourself when THE SPIRIT OF HARRIET TUBMAN: 1-WOMAN SHOW FEATURING LESLIE MCCURDY comes to the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) on Sunday, January 14, 3:00 PM. Tickets are $10. Group discounts and facility fees do not apply to this show. This show will have a no refund, no exchange policy.

In this acclaimed production, award-winning actress Leslie McCurdy embodies the spirit of historic icon Tubman, an escaped slave who became an Underground Railroad “conductor” and risked her life leading other slaves to freedom, all the while with a bounty on her head. A lifelong humanitarian and civil rights activist, Tubman was also a nurse, a Union spy, and a women’s suffrage supporter.

McCurdy re-creates stories using words believed to have been Tubman’s own, exploring the faith and conviction that guided Tubman from her early childhood to her elder years, giving her the drive to follow her dreams.

As the recipient of the 2017 Vigor International Award and the Mayor’s Awards for “Artist of the Year” in 2000 and 2014, McCurdy has performed in American Dream; Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill; Two Trains Running; One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest; Last of the Red Hot Lovers; The Wiz; Checkmates; Tommy; Cabaret; and The Vagina Monologues. She has appeared in the movies The Ides of March, Amanda and the Fox, and Deadlock.

Besides The Spirit of Harriet Tubman, the playwright’s other one-woman plays include Things My Fore-Sisters Saw and Lady Ain’t Singing No Blues.
